The Met Warehouse will be the new home for the Department of Architecture, along with research units and studios from the Department of Urban Studies and Planning, the Center for Real Estate, and the Norman B. The adaptive reuse of the Met Warehouse will create 217,000 gross square feet of space for academic, research, gathering, and makerspace purposes, including undergraduate and graduate labs and studios. Now, an innovative renovation project is converting this iconic building into a modern hub for interdisciplinary design research and education a new home for the MIT School of Architecture and Planning, uniting many elements of the school in a single place and a location for the largest community-wide makerspace on campus, managed by Project Manus. This project was completed in October 2020 and can be seen from the 401 highway as you drive through Cambridge.The Metropolitan Storage Warehouse (Met Warehouse) on the corner of Massachusetts Avenue and Vassar Street has long been a familiar presence to the MIT and Cambridge communities. Throughout the second floor, our team designed glass viewing areas that allowed for moments to gaze onto the shop floors, showcasing the production lines. Iterative testing of owner requirements brought forth the owner’s increased pressures for office expansion making the original second-floor office addition insufficient, a third floor was added to meet the corporate office staff needs. These technologies allowed for close development of the accessory spaces, refining them to suit ATS’s corporate identity and goals. During the design process, 3D design models via rendering and Virtual Reality were used to showcase the intricate details of the project. The office spaces were planned to support the tech-savvy staff and clients with simplified organization and high-end finishes. The new R&D lab was designed for a crisp and functional use, utilizing intensive mechanical, electrical, and structural coordination. Each floor is organized around a central three-story lobby, which incorporates kitchenettes with touchdown space to introduce collaborative opportunities. The lobby features a grand three-story space showcasing a prominent staircase and views into the R & D innovation lab and main cafeteria.

The swooping element cantilevers from the second and third floor carving out a prominent and visually appealing entrance to the front of the building. The facade of the building presents a dramatic “A” taken from the typography of ATS’s logo. Our innovative design team provided ATS with Architectural, Structural, Mechanical, Electrical, and Civil services, along with our partners at GSP Group who provided Landscaping and Site Plan Applications. ATS required design work for additional manufacturing space for their Cambridge building life sciences department, research and development innovative lab, a new corporate office space, and a cafeteria for up to 400 people.
